NOVEMBER 14, 2008 :: GOING AGAIN

I can honestly admit that I miss the days when I used to update this little website once a month with a minimum of two stories (and maybe a few poems). Sadly, though, just like when all of your friends move away to Vancouver, things have to change. Perhaps my year of absence from writing was a bit much, but I can honestly say that my most recent vanishing was not because I was too busy drinking. This time, I was actually writing. Granted, it wasn't at the pace that I would have preferred, and granted, I wasn't cranking out as much stuff as I used to. However, I promise, I honestly promise on my own dead body that my lack of postings will be worth it in the end.

In the last several months, I've learned a few things:

1. Writing while having another full-time job is very, very difficult.

2. Writing on your days off is even harder; "writing" always ends up feeling like "work".

3. Editing, on the other hand, is just hell.

4. Writing a new story instead of editing an already finished one is always preferred.

5. Carrying around five unedited stories is just a heavy burden on the shoulders.

6. One finished and edited story means much rejoicing.

Something that I've also learned about writing and intending to one day make money off of said writing is that I really need to start writing and not showing it off right away. Over the last few months, I've read over several writing calls, and would then immediately go over my story inventory. Then I would realize that I couldn't just take any of the stories "published" on this website and pluck them into a submission for a magazine. Most lit magazines, online or printed, want work that has not been published elsewhere. This means that I can't just write a story and post it here whilst having it featured elsewhere as well. "Elsewhere" being this website.

This is kind of saddening news to me, because I always loved posting my work here for others to read. But with progress comes some sacrifices, and with those sacrifices comes (hopefully) some real rewards. For the most part, any of my work that I feel won't be magazine material will be featured at this website. This doesn't mean that all the works posted here are going to be bad or half-hearted. Trust me; you'll understand when you read the awesome, awesome story that I've featured with this update.

For the most part, lit magazines prefer somewhat shorter stories and tales of specific means. This, of course, depends on the magazine, but the ones that I've bookmarked for later submission want dark stuff that isn't too dark and isn't too this or too that. Basically, what I'm saying is that my generic style of work doesn't yet fit perfectly into any one magazine. Not yet, anyway. But I'll be writing, and I'll be trying, and I'll be submitting some of my more dignified work eventually.

Currently, I'm still in the progress of editing a few odd stories that I've been working on over the last few months. The story that I've added this time around just so happened to be the one that exceeded past the others, and I'm only hoping that the rest of them will follow suit and be just as amazing, if not more. This story, which was loosely inspired by beats in The Kills' song "Alphabet Pony", was started in the early spring. Then the Acer laptop that I had at the time crapped out on me and I was forced to buy a new computer just so I could write it. Alas, the tale came out fresh and lovely and thought-provoking, just like I wanted it to be.
