a novel in-progress

"Marianne, the Grit Queen" was the title of a story that I wrote in fall of 2006, which was published in the online periodical, WTF Magazine, later that year. It was my first published piece of work that wasn't part of a scam schoolkid anthology. The following year, I decided to revisit Marianne by writing a novel surrounding her drunken escapades, but I was unable to, considering the overwhelming amount of homework I had in University. In late 2007 I took a Creative Writing course, and I wrote a thirteen-page condensed version of the novel as my final story for the class.

Loosely based around the events that made up my life the year after high school, a time that I now call "The Hiatus", the novel will tell the story of a particularly aimless young woman, Marianne, and how she deals with the outcomes of her own problems. The main theme that I want to focus on is self-created issues and now one comes to terms with them. Normally, stories deal with conflict that the main character winds up in due to the actions of another person (the antagonist). I wanted to create tension based on the flaws of the protagonist alone.

This page will feature various excerpts from the novel as it's being written. The rewritten version of "Marianne, the Grit Queen" can also be found here.
